A “message” refers to a message segment as defined by our SMS carrier, Twilio. The short version of the story is that every 160 characters in a message counts as as a single message. If you send a message that is 200 characters, for example, that will count as two messages. If you send out a 200–character message to 10 people, that counts as 20 messages, not 10. Messages with ‘special’ characters consume segments faster because it takes more data to encode them. 

Our software always tells you how many segments a message will consume before you send it so there are no surprises.
